........I became interested in Survivor mainly because I was a used-book (3rd party) Seller on Amazon.com. I had an incredible 1950's book written by an airplane pilot about how to survive in the wilderness. I had also read a book about the South American soccer team who survived a plane crash in the Andes. I'd read a book about a young man who went to live in the wilds of Alaska but didn't make it. I was (and AM) a devoted fan of Timothy Treadwell, friend of the bears. In fact, survival is one of my favorite book subjects. I heard about the CBS show Survivor over on Amazon and watched it and immediately got hooked. Need I say LORD OF THE FLIES and ROBINSON CRUSOE are some of my favorite books from High School? I am fascinated by the psycho-social drama of people stranded out in nature, trying to survive. ....... I found myself living in an abandoned coffee-shack on the hill of Kainaliu near Kealakekua in Hawaii (The Big Island.) It was two stories high, with huge windows but no glass in the windows. I could hear the birds and boars and ruslting ti leaves and banana bushes; I could look out my bedroom window and see miles down the hill to the rocky Kona shore. We had no running water or indoor plumbing. We caught rainwater in a huge water tank, and used it for everything. Showers were hooked up outside in little leafy copses covered with purple, pink and red bougainvillea cascading across huge elephant-ear leaves and giant ferns. The bathroom facilities were Japanese-style holes in the ground, where one squatted. Baths were really heated tin ofuros heated by burning coals under the high stand.
