Donating the 50K

AP) Denise Martin, who gained fame as the lunch lady on CBS' reality show "Survivor: China," is donating the $50,000 she received from producer Mark Burnett to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDs Foundation.

Martin told viewers on Sunday night's live finale that she'd been demoted to janitor at a school in Douglas, Mass., after finishing fourth on the show. After hearing her story, Burnett surprised Martin with the money to help get her life back.

On Tuesday, Martin acknowledged on CBS' "The Early Show" that she'd been promoted to custodian, at her own request, before the competition began.

"It was not my intention to be misleading," Martin, 40, said on the broadcast. "I'm sorry, and I apologize to everybody."

In a statement issued Tuesday by the network, Martin said she took "full responsibility" for her actions.

"I do not feel comfortable about accepting the $50,000. I would instead ask that it be donated to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation," the statement said. "Please accept my apology. I would also like to thank all the people who have supported me through this experience."

I say good for her for donating the money to charity. I understand eveyone feeling bad for her due to all the negativity, but what i have not seen anyone post is sypathy for the people she works for. Obviously all of her sympathetics don't realize that the principal of the school received Death threats towards himself and his family, also others in the that school system had also received threats from the many Denise supporters. Look i don't think she should be burned at the stake and i'm sure she's a nice person and all but i don't feel bad if this whole thing upset's her, My heart felt sympathy goes out to those who actually received threats stemming from this, they are the true victims. Let this serve as a valuable lesson to all even the smallest "innocent" lie can have great repercussions. No lie is a good lie no matter the intent.

I totally agree. She should not be around impressionable kids. Her lie in real life had consequences - serious ones. She did not do much in the game but follow others. She whined at the end that she could have won. Dream on. Everyone knew she was out at three or four. She missed her chance to switch alliances. A lunch lady should be able to balance cups better than that. Liar, liar, pants on fire. 3  out of 9 found this valuable. Do you?

I think she did it because of all the negativity that came from the truth came out.

That story she gave on the finale just sounded well rehersed. The smile she had while she was receiving the message of the 50K not even a glimps like wait this is not a good thing.
I hope her apology is sincere. I do wish her and her family luck, but this was just dumb, to try that on national TV on the finale, how did she think the truth would not come out.
I'm glad she donated it. We all make mistakes, I will forgive her as God has forgiven me a countless times.

Ya'all make it sound like she had this major plan of lying about her work situation to gain $50 K. I DO NOT BELIEVE SHE LIED AT ALL. What I do believe is the stress of being on the finale of Survivor was overwhelming, and she did not choose her words wisely. Obviously there had been conversation between Jeff and the producers prior to the show airing right? Since Jeff brought the subject up. All Denise did was to go along with Jeff after he brought the subject up, but wound up making a mess of what she was trying to say. WHY do I believe this….
1 .She for the most part played a fairly honest game. She could have and should have taken Todd out but she remained loyal to her alliance.
2. In all her interviews on the show she showed nothing but being an honest decent hard working person.
3. If she indeed did” FLAT OUT LIE” I do believe the school would have let her go.
4. She had no idea that Mark Burnett would throw out an additional 50K.

Another note I would like to make here. IF the school was receiving death threats, you can not blame Denise for that? It is not Denise’s fault there are so many Crazy freaky people in the world. Blaming her for their action would be like blaming all Muslims’ for 9-11.

So until you walk in Denise shoes, or at least pretend to try her shoes on. Try to imagine yourself on live T.V. The Producers love a sad story and are willing to pay for it. It is all a simple matter of RATINGS. So lets give Denise the benefit of doubt, and not string her up for screwing up her words. Tis the season for giving ya know!!
I for one am sorry she donated the money, She and her family looked as though they could use it.

Merry Christmas to you all.

Katrit, well it's nice to see you are soo positive. My only point is NO LIE=NO THREATS....you can spin it any way you want to, but lets seperate this lie with what happened on 9-1-1 these two things are not even in the same universe. It's obvious you like her and you are going to stand behind her no matter what she did so here is a pat on the back for that, but please DO NOT insult the victims of that dreadful day with some reality tv competitor. That is all
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

Oh Joe your creative imagination has gone awry. There is not one word in my post that insults any victims of 9-11. We as individuals are all responsible for our own actions. The certain individuals that made any threats to the school were the exact individuals responsible for their own hate crime. Denise corrected her MISTAKE rather quickly I might add.

As for defending Denise, I feel empathy for Denise for being accused of death threats, and of lying to get the 50K, If she was such a grand schemer she would have done far better on Survivor. The honest ones never do win, she played a pitiful game. I feel for her because she works in a low paying job. But I praise her because SHE DOES WORK, because she turned the situation around and donated the money that could have changed her life to a worthy charity. How many on here would have gave the money away???? What would Joe do?? Am I too positive? Maybe that's what this world needs is more positive thinking and less kicking people while they are down. More forgiving and less hate.

Katrit...I also prefer to be a positive person. However, we have a responsibility to call anyone out that attempts to pull the wool over the rest of us...Denise, in my opinion, pulled a boner and obviously did not get away with it. She seemed to panic toward the end and started the whining/crying routine that turned so many of us off...If she had not...I believe she still would have received some kind of compensation at the finale..either through the show or from the viewers...That's all ...the way it came down left a sour feeling for some of us that were pulling for her during the game! There is an element of respect for any job that we do..to demean it ...demeaned it for all the rest of the folks that have to go to jobs such as that daily! As far as I am concerned that's it for me on any further comments about Denise...You all have a safe and Merry Xmas and may the powers of the universe look kindly upon you!

I think Denise was just kind've on the spot and needed something to say. She said later in one of those interviews that she said that she asked the superintendent or someone if she could have her old job back despite the drop in pay. I guess she really just liked being a lunch lady. Oh well, u can all just beleive she was lying if you want to. I take it at face value when she said "It was not my intent to be misleading." 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?
